ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT - NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published the Muir Woods Road Improvement Project Environmental Assessment (EA) for public review and comment. FHWA is the lead agency under NEPA. Project Location: Muir Woods Road (also known as Frank Valley Road) connects Muir Woods National Monument to California Highway 1 (CA1) in Marin, California, approximately 17 miles north of San Francisco. Lead Agency and File Number: FHWA File Number CA FLAP MRN CR107(1) Purpose of the EA: The EA is part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, which considers the beneficial and adverse effects of federal, federally-funded, and/or federally-permitted projects on the quality of the human environment. This EA evaluates a No-Build Alternative that would result in no improvements, and the Proposed Project. Marin County is the lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and has prepared a Draft Individual Study (IS) with Proposed Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) to meet the County's obligations under CEQA. The Draft IS with Proposed MND and FHWA's EA have been prepared concurrently to support environmental compliance requirements for the Proposed Project and the public review period will run concurrently. Project Description: FHWA, in cooperation with the Marin County Department of Public Works, the National Park Service, and California Department of Parks and Recreation is proposing to improve a segment of Muir Woods Road. The project primarily consists of resurfacing, restoring, and rehabilitating a 2.4-mile segment of Muir Woods Road. Proposed improvements also include replacing and realigning a substandard bridge over Redwood Creek; formalizing a segment of the Redwood Creek Trail along the roadway; stabilizing the roadway embankment in areas of slope failure; and implementing drainage improvements consisting of culvert repair, culvert replacement, and culvert outfall protection.
