NOTICE OF PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL FLOOD INSURANCE PROGRAM 2026 The City of Destin, Florida participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Participation makes federally backed flood insurance available to property owners and maintains the Citys eligibility for certain types of federal disaster assistance. As required by the NFIP, the City enforces floodplain management regulations to reduce flood risk. Development within designated flood hazard areas requires permits and must comply with applicable standards, including elevation of residential structures and floodproofing of non-residential buildings. Flooding can occur in any location, including areas outside of mapped high-risk zones. Flood hazard areas are identified on Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), which are available for public review. Flood risks may change over time due to development and natural conditions. Public Information and Assistance Available: The City of Destin provides the following services at no cost: Flood zone determinations and map interpretation Base flood elevation and flood depth information Guidance on development and substantial improvement requirements Historical flood information and known drainage problem areas Coastal flood hazard information (including Coastal A Zones and wave action) Information on natural floodplain functions (wetlands, habitat, open space) Property Protection Assistance: City staff are available to provide advice on reducing flood risk, including retrofitting, elevation, and other mitigation measures.
