EPA Makes Changes to the Cleanup Plan 

for the Rowe Industries Groundwater Contamination 

Superfund Site in Sag Harbor, New York



The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency signed an Explanation of Significant Differences, or ESD, to modify the cleanup plan selected in the September 1992 Record of Decision for the Rowe Industries Groundwater Contamination Superfund site in Sag Harbor, NY.




An ESD is required when there are significant changes to a previously selected cleanup plan that does not fundamentally alter the overall cleanup approach. This ESD, which is the fourth ESD for the site, revises cleanup levels and removes inorganic contaminants from the 1992 cleanup plan. Data shows that inorganic concentrations across the site are at or below the cleanup levels identified in the original cleanup plan.




EPA issued the first ESD in July 1997, increasing the amount of contaminated soil the agency needed to remove, as well as including removing vapors from soil. EPA issued the second ESD in December 2001 to modify the discharge plan for the treated groundwater and issued the third ESD in December 2004 to document the use of injections that accelerate the bioremediation treatment in the groundwater.
