The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Sacramento District is soliciting the public to assess interest in establishing a Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) to provide input on the environmental restoration program at Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) Hamilton Army Airfield (HAAF) Landfill 26 (FUDS #J09CA7062-05). A RAB is an advisory board made up of interested and concerned stakeholders who reflect the various interests of the local community, as well as local, state, and federal government agencies.HAAF Landfill 26 is located on the site of the Hamilton Air Force Base (HAFB) located east of Highway 101 and west of San Pablo Bay near Novato, Marin County, California, about 25 miles north of San Francisco. From the time of its commissioning in 1935, HAFB served as a base for fighter, bomber, and transport aircrafts, as an aircraft maintenance facility, and as a combat crew processing facility. USACE is following the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). The cleanup remedy for Landfill 26 was implemented in 2009 and consists of a cap on landfill wastes and passive venting of methane in soil gas. USACE conducts annual inspection and maintenance on the landfill, annual monitoring of groundwater and soil gas, and recurring reviews of the effectiveness of the remedy.
