THE SCHOOL BOARD OF LEON COUNTY, FLORIDA NOTICE OF INTENT TO AMEND A RULE RULE NUMBERS/TITLES: Policy 8800 Religious and Other Ceremonies and Observances PURPOSE AND EFFECT: Revisions to Policy 8800 include language that the District will observe January 27 as "Holocaust Remembrance Day." The District may provide instruction on the harmful impacts of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism and the positive contributions of the Jewish community to humanity. These revisions are based on SB 356 (Ch. 2025-86) which created F.S. 683.196 (Holocaust Remember Day). SUMMARY OF THE RULE: Federal law prohibits the School Board from adopting any policy or rule respecting or promoting an establishment of religion. Further, Federal and State law prohibit the Board from adopting any policy or rule, or from entering into any agreement, prohibiting any student or staff member from the free, individual, and voluntary exercise or expression of the individual's religious beliefs. However, such exercise or expression may be limited to lunch periods or other noninstructional time periods when students and staff are free to associate.
