REGULAR SESSIONOF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THESOUTH TAMA COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Board of Directors of the Community School District of South Tama County met on April 27, 2026 for a Regular Session at the Partnership Center, Tama, Iowa beginning at 5:00 p.m. with some members of the community attending electronically through Google Hangouts.The Board and guests stated the “Pledge of Allegiance” and the District's mission statement.On call of the roll the following were present: Elizabeth Dolezal, Rick Hopper, Joe Hanus, Danya Keahna, and Megan Thiessen. Quorum Present. Also present were: Superintendent John Cain, Board Secretary Katie Mathern, Mary Mixdorf, Gerald Husak, Cheryl Husak, Ben Adams, Dixie Forcht, Clayton Fritz, Nazaret Carilllo-Duran, Melody Vallente, and members of the community through Google Hangouts.Motion by Thiessen, second by Hanus to approve the agenda. All Ayes. The motion carried.Public Comment - Gerald Husak commented that the new floor mat featuring the South Tama logo looks very nice and was a great addition.Motion by Thiessen, second by Hopper to approve the following consent agenda items: April 13, 2026 Regular Session minutes, April 16, 2026 Special Session minutes, bills for payment, financials, Geocomm Service Agreement, Contract Between Iowa Valley Community College District and STC CSD for 2026-2027 Academic Year, Contract Between Iowa Valley Community College District and STC CSD for Summer College Credit Program 2026, Workspace Quote, Reinig Center Rental Agreement, donation from South Tama Activity Boosters in the amount of $1,499.95 toward the purchase of 5 sets of Air Compression Recovery System Boots and early graduation requests from Jonatan Perez Mauricio - December 2026. All Ayes. The motion carried.Melody Vallente and FBLA students presented on the 2026 FBLA National Leadership Conference and shared State Leadership Conference results. National qualifiers included Skyla DeSorbo and Clayton Fritz in Digital Animation and Nazaret Carillo-Duran in Job Interview. Students discussed how FBLA promotes leadership, career readiness, and student growth. The National Leadership Conference will be held June 29 - July 2, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas.Superintendent Cain provided updates on weather-related decisions and personnel and staffing adjustments. Discussion also included the recent settlement of negotiations, potential grant funding for school safety improvements, legislative updates, and upcoming end-of-year calendar adjustments that will require a public hearing in May.The Board discussed an updated quote from 95 Percent Group reflecting a reduction in shipping costs from 10% to 7%.The Board discussed the District Maintenance Position Realignment plan, including the hiring of Andy Moran as Elementary Maintenance and Head Custodian. The change begins the process of transitioning maintenance positions into individual buildings to improve efficiency and support cost-saving measures. Additional discussion regarding impacts at the middle school, high school, and district level will continue.Motion by Thiessen, second by Keahna to approve the following personnel requests. All Ayes. The motion carried.Motion by Thiessen, second by Hanus to approve the SAVVAS quote, in the amount of $48,200.00, for the SIOP model, pending grant funding approval. All Ayes. The motion carried.Motion by Thiessen, second by Hanus to approve the resolutions to set the public hearings on the conveyance of the three (3) properties (corner lot, tennis courts/green space, and old football field) for May 26, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. in the Partnership Center located at 215 W. 9th Street, Tama, IA 52339 and that the secretary is authorized and directed to prepare, publish, and distribute the Notice of Hearing. All Ayes. The motion carried.Motion by Thiessen, second by Hopper to approve publishing the Budget Amendment for the 2025-2026 school year and set the Public Hearing for May 26, 2026. All Ayes. The motion carried.Motion by Thiessen, second by Keahna to approve the audit proposal for the fiscal years ending June 30, 2026, 2027, and 2028 submitted by Kay L. Chapman, CPA PC. All Ayes. The motion carried.Motion by Thiessen, second by Keahna to approve the certified staff increases for 2026-2027, including a starting salary increase to $51,000, personal leave carryover of up to two days, a $700 base increase, a $300 longevity bonus for certified staff with 20 years of service, and continued efforts to address salary compaction. All Ayes. The motion carried.Motion by Hopper, second by Keahna to approve the 2026-2027 support staff wage increases as presented, including a $1,000 increase for District Office personnel, an additional $1,500 for the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent due to expanded responsibilities assisting the Director of Curriculum, a $0.40 hourly increase for classified staff, and a $0.25 hourly increase for transportation staff. All Ayes. The motion carried.Superintendent Cain reviewed upcoming district events and activities scheduled from April 27 through May 8, including boys and girls golf, tennis, soccer, and track competitions at both the middle school and high school levels.
