Air Force invites community to learn about Environmental Restoration at former Griffiss AFB The Department of the Air Force will host an Open House April 22, 2026 from 6 to 8 p.m. to provide updates on ongoing environmental actions at the former Griffiss Air Force Base, including the ongoing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) investigation. The event - at the Custom's Building, 660 Hangar Road, Rome, New York - will also help the Air Force gauge community interest in reestablishing the former Griffiss Restoration Advisory Board, or RAB. The board enables two-way communication between local stakeholders and the Air Force, provides insight into restoration activities on and around the installation, and offers community members opportunities to review progress and share feedback with decision makers. The Department of Defense has spent more than $64 million on environmental restoration activities since the base ceased operations in 1995. As of December 30, 2025, the environmental restoration program has achieved site closeout with no restrictions on property use at 751 sites with 21 sites remaining. "We have seen some great successes within the environmental restoration program at Griffiss and are excited to share this information with our community," said David Farnsworth, BRAC Environmental Coordinator at the former Griffiss. For more information about the former Griffiss AFB Open House, please contact David Farnsworth at (518)563-2871 or david.farnsworth@us.af.mil. April 12, 19 2026 LNYS0495487
