Notice is hereby given by the persons whose names appear hereon of their intention to circulate the petition within the boundaries of Ventura Unified School District for the purpose of qualifying for the ballot an initiative measure parcel tax entitled "Student-Led Mental Health Support Fund." A statement of the reasons of the proposed action as contemplated in the petition is as follows: Ventura public schools currently face a multimillion-dollar budget deficit. In the past, Ventura Unified School District (VUSD) relied on a parcel tax to support essential services. In 2024, however, Measure H failed to pass, resulting in the loss of several million dollars in school funding. As a result, counselors, librarians, and other student-facing positions were slated for cuts. transfers, or layoffs. While the school board ultimately preserved many of these positions, the district's ongoing budget deficits will result in additional cuts. As a student in VUSD, I understand firsthand the importance of a strong, supportive educational environment. Counselors, librarians, and other mental health supports play a vital role in student wellness, campus safety, and academic success. The proposed initiative would enact a parcel tax of $99 per year, per parcel, located within the boundaries of the Ventura Unified School District for a period of five years and would generate approximately $3.6 million per year to support student wellness by maintaining essential services and staff that directly serve students.
